This second annual bike helmet event was a great success, thanks to the help and support of our sponsors, partners, and the Grand Rapids community

Last Saturday marked our firm’s second annual Lids for Kids bike helmet and safety event, geared towards providing free bike helmets to Grand Rapids kids who might not otherwise have access to them. Despite the rain, 496 kids were custom-fitted with brand new helmets – beating last year’s number by a significant amount (and we had better weather last year, too!).

New to Lids for Kids this year were kid-friendly games run at booths hosted by a number of our co-sponsor and event partners, including the Brain Injury Association of Michigan, Fox 17, Grand Rapids Public Schools, and Hope Network. The Grand Rapids Fire Department was on hand give tours of their fire engine and to provide those who brought their bicycles with free bike licenses. Central District Cyclery was also present to perform minor bike repairs. Fox 17 anchor Christian Frank was a wonderful emcee who kept the kids engaged throughout the entire event.

In addition to receiving a bike helmet from one of the many Lids for Kids volunteers who came from across Michigan, each child was entered into a raffle to win a free bike and a number of other prizes generously donated by Grand Rapids area businesses, including the Grand Rapids Art Museum, Grand Rapids Children’s Museum, Westgate Bowl, John Ball Zoo, Circle Theatre, and Celebration! Cinemas North. Eight lucky children went home with brand new bicycles, and a number of others had tickets and passes to explore the museums, plays, and recreation centers Grand Rapids has to offer – just in time for summer!

It is safe to say that our Grand Rapids personal injury attorneys have successfully brought the bike helmet event tradition to West Michigan, as it originated over 13 years ago in Lansing with Heads Up for Safety. Given that so many bike accidents are happening in Grand Rapids, many of which involve children, it is imperative that everyone remember to wear their helmets while riding. During our decades serving the people of West Michigan and the rest of the state, we have seen the difference a bike helmet can make; it truly can make the difference between whether someone survives a bicycle accident without suffering a life-altering traumatic brain injury, and whether an individual isn’t as fortunate.

At the end of the day, if we can prevent even one brain injury as a result of a helmet received during Lids for Kids, then it’s all worthwhile.
